  • Tiller Talk - Editorial - Rurik Grimnisson
    • Winter is customarily a time for reflection. With a wood fire (and a horn of honey-mead) you can stare at the flames and coals until entering into a light trance. Unbidden memories and associations will arise; insights gained, realizations made. How does this occur? The answer is that you have stopped thinking in a serial fashion: chronological patterns of thought mostly associated with the processing of external sensual information. You have switched to analogue thought: nonchronological or comprehensive pattern recognition. Your brain waves are no longer pounding out the rhythm called beta (14-30 Hz or cycles/second); the frequency associated with modern ‘intelligence’: our everyday survival mode of thinking. In trance you descend to the slower frequencies corresponding to the alpha, theta and delta labels (varying between ½-13 Hz).

  • The Ravens Caw - Editorial - Dirk Schmitt
    • Jera. The wheel turns, and where are we a year down the track? (Actually, it’s now almost another complete year down the track on top, but you get that.) We’ve been building what looks to be a good community and managing to hold regular gatherings. Our numbers slowly increase as does our level of involvement outside the bounds of our community.

  • A Dream - Dream Transcript - Kerstin Fehn
    • Standing still, looking out over the calm blue-green sea with its wavelets gently lapping at my four-year-old feet, I felt secure in the peaceful surroundings of the beach I found myself on. Pastel stones studded the white sand here and there, and a soft yellow light suffused everything. I noticed there was no sun, and indeed none was needed here. A warm and gentle breeze caressed my childish face like fingers, soft and reassuring. Suddenly, my serenity was broken. A shadow, moving quickly and fluidly, drew my attention to a group of large rocks in the distance, though I had seemed to sense it rather than see it. A figure moved again, though when I turned my head sharply to look at it directly I couldn't see anything move. All I could see were three large, mosscovered rocks in the distant shadows. Ancient-looking they were, craggy and cold.

  • Book Review - Rune Rede - Reviewed by Dirk Schmitt
    • Well, once more I am called upon to give a book review for a good friend. As always it is hardest to review a book for someone you know well. On the one hand you wish to give a good review to ensure the success of the work, but on the other you also wish to be impartial so that you know that people are purchasing a quality work. Fortunately in the case of Ruarik’s book the work speaks quite well for itself, being a most comprehensive book on Runes and their history, meaning, and application. In fact, I have read many works on the Runes in the past 10 years since they first gained my interest, and I can with some authority say that this is one of the most comprehensive and valuable works on the Runes to be released to date.

  • Balinock Farm Yule & Handfasting of Vanessa & David - Tyrvald Bjornganga
    • Yule this year was a very special occasion for AsatruR in South Australia. Not only did we have the opportunity to hold our Yule Fest over night on a hill top farm in the more remote part of the Adelaide Hills, but we were also given the great honour of conducting the handfasting of the property owners, David and Vanessa Warne.

  • Book Review - Ancient Goddesses - Reviewed by Dirk Schmitt
    • The great global Earth Mother Goddess is an idea which is espoused by many for what-ever reason. This work, being a collection of the writings from various international experts in their fields, seeks to provide clearly and well written investigations into the nature of ancient goddesses, and hence the name of the work.

  • Book Review - Old European Religion - Reviewed by Dirk Schmitt
    • This work is all about the way in which our ancestors thought before there was a dogmatic, defined, delimitated, demarcated, and probably a few other de- words to boot. It speaks of a time when the tales of our ancestral people were designed to tell a story which explored an idea, a way of living and of doing things. The concept of choice, and it’s consequence is explored in pre-classical and post-classical literature.

  • Book Review - Norse Magic - Reviewed by Dirk Schmitt
    • This is a work that has been around for many years, and as it currently is still very much available, I thought a review was necessary to ensure that people who are starting out know what they are getting for their money. The greatest advantage of this book is it’s price and availability. In other words, it’s easy and cheap to get hold of. Unfortunately that tends to also speak of its relative value in terms of how it presents the Folkway.
