Hail to Njorth of Noatun--our God of Harbour Home,
His essence embodied--in sea spray and rich loam.
From the sea and soil's depth--He brings forth fish and grain,
Within water and land--Van-God gives growth and gain.
Wind and Fire are as well--deemed within His domain,
Throughout the tides of time--regally He shall reign.
Friend of Midgarth farmers--Friend of sea-faring men,
Calming or calling winds--Njorth helps His Heathen kin.
Furthermore He grants gifts--of Land's wealth far and wide,
Earth's lover and brother--shall with us share and guide.
To Homeland's of our Heart--near fields, forest, or sea,
Vanir's Father of Frith--shall abide and ever be.
Our yare Wane from the West--of the high-timbered hall,
Master of many skills--adept at one and all.
The Father of Fro Ing--Lord Phallic-God of force,
and Father of Freia--Seith's Ken-torch and ur-source.
Njorth thus shares close kinship--being the Earth-Kin's sire,
Knows the male mammal's lust--as defining desire.
Loki likens Njorth's mouth--to a Maiden's midden,
His statement seems to scold--yet veiled praise is hidden.
Fervor of the feral--perversion some may say,
Tasting the forbidden--is our Earthly Kin's way.
The Sensual Sovereign--Carnality's high King,
As well divine Diar--Oath-god of the Oath-ring.
Our diverse Deity--whether pure or profane,
Njorth steadfastly blends both--mystical and mundane.
Diar - Snorri writes that Njorth and Fro Ing were diar among the Aesir.
The meaning is unclear, but Turville-Petre states that it "probably
implies priests of a particularly exalted kind."
Earthly-Kin - The animal world. I have often observed our animals,
such as the bull and billy goats, lustfully follow the females around
and drink their urine. The billy goats especially seem to glory in
the event, holding the urine in their slightly open mouths with heads
tipped back, as if making an offer to the sky.
High-timbered hall - In the Grimnismal it is written that Njorth
rules a high-timbered harrow in Noatun. I have used the word hall
instead of harrow.
Ken - Used to indicate Kenaz (GMC: torch or OE cen: torch), "the
rune of human passion, lust, and sexual love," characteristics
often associated with Freia.
Noatun - the name of Njorth's home, meaning either "enclosure
of ships" or "harbour."
Midden - In Hollander's version of the Lokasenna, Loki states that
Hymir's handmaids used Njorth's mouth as a pot and midden - inferring
that the handmaidens urinated into his mouth.
Midgarth - Earth, the world of men.
Ur - Pimal.
Yare - Ready, prepared, skilled.
