Day of Rememberance for King Radbod of Frisia

August 9th (Suggested)

Christian missionaries in Frisia had done well. Radbod, the king, had agreed to accept the new faith. As the day of his baptism drew near, the king voiced one nagging doubt: What had become of all his ancestors who had died without recourse to Christ? The monkish reply was swift and emphatic; all the heathens were writhing in hellish agony.

The king showed that the noble blood still flowed through his veins. Proudly he responded "Then I would rather be suffering there with them than go to heaven with a parcel of beggars." The baptism was cancelled, the priests were sent scurrying, and Frisia remained free of the Christian yoke for many years to come.

Give thanks for Radbod's brave decision by any of these acts:

  • Renounce Christianity, much as the king himself did.
  • Drink a toast to your heathen ancestors, to Radbod's stalwart forebears (for spawning such a worthy character), and to Radbod himself. If there's anything left in the cup, drink to the missionary who made a reply so stupid as to guarantee Radbod's wrath!
  • Friagabi was a Goddess of the ancient Frisians; her name means something like "Giver of Freedom". Pour her a libation and send a prayer her way.
  • Meditate on the rune kenaz. One of its meanings has to do with the clan as a time transcending unity, past and present alike.
  • In the spirit of Friagabi, promote political liberty. Act to save your right to bear arms, or to be politically incorrect.
  • Radbod "just said no" to Christianity. In your daily life, how can you do the same, ie. reject Christianity, not just as an alien and imperialistic religious creed, but as an ignoble and corrupting value system?
