Withcraft
a history - by P.G. Maxwell-Stuart
Book
Review by Dirk Schmitt
Much is made of Witchcraft
in the modern world, usually by those with an agenda. What is very surprising
to see, is an author for whom the process is one of academic and historical
study, and this is exactly what P.G. Maxwell-Stuart has undertaken.
Before I go further, I'll provide some further details on the book:
Published
by: Tempus Publishing
ISBN: 0 7524 2305 3
Pages: 160
List of Chapters:
- 'Witches' in Greece and
Rome
- Enter the Christian Witch
- A Plague of Witches
- Trying a Witch
- Neither Gone nor Forgotten
- The Modern Witch
This is an excellent work,
which whilst not very large, it is rather comprehensive for its' size.
Unlike many 'wishful thinking' works, it concentrates on historical
evidence especially judicial writings and looks at not only the secular
environment but also the Church and the attitude of its' adherents.
Many interesting realities are uncovered such as the fact that not only
were women tried on witchcraft, but also many men and indeed children.
There is a comprehensive look at the development from the earliest of
times, right through to the modern revival in the form of Wicca, and
other forms. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in the
real history of Witchcraft.
