Day of Rememberance for Sigurd the Volsung

June 9th (Suggested)

No Teutonic hero overshadows Sigurd. Of all the great warriors and striding conquerors, of all the brilliant skalds and stubborn martyrs, none can match his fame. His saga was passed on to us by both the Continental and the Scandinavian branches of the Germanic folk. Richard Wagner adapted the tale for his monumental operatic cycle. The general theme, though, is not limited by these forms; in novel and film and fairy tale its motifs are repeated for the enjoyment and the elevation of all who hear them. Sigurd, the slayer of dragons and winner of the cursed treasure, has won good word-fame for as long as our Folk lives to hear of his deeds.

In your own way, you can be a little more like Sigurd. Here's how:

  • Sigurd was famed for his open-handedness. Do something generous for some member of the Folk this day. Give a present or a helping hand either to an individual or to an organisation furthering the interests of our people.
  • Slay your own dragon! Find a fear that lurks within, face it, and strike it with the sword of your will. Is that a little much for one day? Then at least plan the demise of your interior monster, and resolve to put the scheme into effect as soon as you can.
  • It was an evilly-charmed draught of mead that made ready the way for Sigurd's downfall. Undo the deed by buying a drink for a friend in honest warmth and comradeship.
  • Sigurd was only the latest in the line of Volsungs, fostered by Odin and watched over by him. This family was clearly of special importance to the Gods. What about your own clan? What have you done to add to their glory? Put your thoughts to paper, and resolve to do something today to improve the situation!
  • Greet the sun with upraised arms and the words the valkyrie Brynhild taught Sigurd:

Hail, day! Hail, ye day's sons!
Hail, night and the daughters of night!
Look down on me with friendly eyes
    And grant me victory.

Hail the Gods! Hail the Goddesses!
Hail, him on the giving earth!
Goodly speech and human wit Grant to me, the mighty,
And healing hands, while I do live. Hail!

  • Read the story of Sigurd. If you don't own a copy of the Volsungs' saga, buy one.
