Day of Rememberance for Unn the Deep Minded

July 8th (Suggested)

Unn was a powerful figure from Laxdaela Saga who emigrated to Scotland to avoid the hostility of the Christian monarch, Harald Finehair. She established dynasties in the Orkney and Faroe Islands by carefully choosing mates for her grand daughters. When she settled in Iceland she continued to show all those traits which were her hallmarks - a strong will, determination to control, dignity, and a noble character. In the last days of her life, she solidified her line by selecting one of her grandsons as heir. She died during his wedding festivities, having accomplished her goals and worked out her fate or Orlog here in Midgard. Unn received a typical Nordic ship burial, surrounded by her treasure and her reputation.

Here are some ways to remember her:

  • Do something to establish your line. Find a way you can significantly improve your children's education, physical ability, or character. Sign them up for a boxing class. Give them piano lessons. Push them harder in school. Save for their college education.
  • More to the point, start thinking about what kind of person they need to marry and have children with.
  • Meditate on the deep-minded and strong-willed women in your own line. Salute them with a loving toast.
  • Think on the traits of the ideal matri/patriarch. List them. How do you rate? What should you do about it?
  • Unn was noted for her dignity. Do something dignified today.
  • Be deep-minded. Read a difficult article or book, take part in a weighty philosophical conversation, play a game of chess.
